This painting is very special and offers a somewhat political statement about the recent plight of the Mary River (in Queensland on Australia's East Coast) when politicians were planning on damming the river and tame its wildness and beauty. The image is intended to evoke a certain amount of uneasiness in the viewers mind because they don’t know and can’t quite tell if the model (The river’s spirit) is still alive or not which is a visual metaphor for the river itself and its plight. The tree reflections seem to stretch out like fingers to cradle and support the Model from below and hold her afloat in a caring and supportive embrace while the river is trying to be alive with movement at the top of the painting. All the while the bottom of the river is there and drawing the model down to its depths. The painting also shows 3 characteristics of the river and of water, being reflective, supportive and solid but fully transparent and vulnerable.
