This Arnhem Land aboriginal elder is a wise soul and life hardened who now looks out through glassy eyes tinged with some sadness, but behind those eyes is much wisdom gained through a life of hard and tough living in a very hard and unforgiving land.. Age has withered his body slightly but not his stature, presence, power or spirit which all still remain strong and able.
Arnhem Land is a vast wilderness area in the northeast corner of Australia’s Northern Territory. It's home to the traditional indigenous landowners, the Yolngu people.
 
The original was painted using charcoal onto stretched canvas as I believed this to be the best and only way to depict this man of the earth and country and only the raw tactile effects that charcoal delivers would be good enough and fitting for my Arnhem Land aboriginal elder
